Yulu is India’s largest EBITDA profitable shared electric mobility platform, designed to solve first- and last-mile connectivity challenges across urban centers. Operating a fleet of 45,000 electric vehicles across major cities, Yulu offers a seamless, sustainable solution for both hyperlocal deliveries and daily commuters, supporting millions of journeys with lower carbon emissions.
Built entirely on AWS since inception, Yulu has scaled rapidly while maintaining low latency, high availability, and real-time responsiveness across its platform. As demand surged, the company optimized its infrastructure to support growth without compromising performance or cost efficiency. Today, Yulu has powered over 275 million greener deliveries and 1.3 billion kilometers of cleaner transport, enabling faster mobility, economic empowerment, and a more sustainable urban future.
Launched in 2017 by a group of urban-tech optimists, Yulu set out to close the country’s first- and last-mile transport gaps—places where metros, cabs, and buses still fall short.
“Our core mission is to provide a sustainable solution to mobility,” says Manjunath Athrey, Head of Engineering at Yulu. “What we saw in India was that despite the metro and road networks, last-mile access remained unreliable, overcrowded, or too expensive. We knew there had to be a better way.”
That “better way” became a two-part platform: Miracle for commuters, and DeX for delivery partners. Built for simplicity, inclusivity and scale, these vehicles have transformed how people and packages move through Indian cities, with lower emissions and maximum reach.
Behind Yulu’s simple front-end experience lies a complex, data-heavy ecosystem. Every vehicle transmits hundreds of data points every few seconds, covering location, battery health, usage patterns, and more. To keep operations running smoothly, this real-time telemetry needed a backend that could scale across cities while staying fast, secure, and cost-efficient.
“Our unit economics aren’t based on customer acquisition. They’re based on how efficiently we can manage each vehicle,” says Naveen Dachuri, Co-founder and CTO of Yulu. “That means our technology must be tightly integrated with our fleet and deeply optimized.
These core requirements demanded robust infrastructure supported by a partner who could match Yulu’s pace and ambition.
From the very beginning, Yulu chose to build on AWS. “We looked at the market for partners who could take care of the basic tech infrastructure while we focused on our primary solution,” says Athrey. “We needed someone who could help us get to market fast and scale rapidly, and AWS offered that.”
AWS brought startup-ready support, data residency compliance, and a robust toolkit. “We collect sensitive location data,” Dachuri explains. “AWS gave us the compliance assurance we needed, along with tools that allowed us to process nearly 200 data points per vehicle in real time.”
With AWS, Yulu built a platform that could meet the demands of a rapidly growing, real-world fleet. The company relied on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (opens in a new tab) (Amazon EC2) to scale compute power and later migrated to AWS Graviton (opens in a new tab) processors for a boost in performance and energy efficiency. The shift was seamless and the results were immediate.
“Performance improvement was one tangible result we saw,” says Athrey. “Once we moved to AWS Graviton, we noticed a significant uptick, and that gave us the confidence to expand to even more cities.”
To maintain low latency across cities, Yulu containerized its platform using Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (opens in a new tab) (Amazon EKS). At the data layer, Amazon Relational Database Service (opens in a new tab) (Amazon RDS) provided operational reliability, while Amazon Athena (opens in a new tab) helped surface insights that made the user experience more intelligent and responsive. AWS engineers worked directly with Yulu’s team to streamline code and reduce resource usage, helping the platform scale more affordably.
By building on AWS, Yulu has grown from a startup with a bold idea into a mobility platform transforming how India moves and earns. Backend performance has improved, customer experiences are smoother, and the platform remains stable across a growing network of riders and cities.
The platform supports thousands of riders—many from underserved communities—who now earn ₹40,000 to ₹50,000 a month through gig work made possible by electric mobility.
Now, the team is looking ahead. With AWS supporting early generative AI initiatives, Yulu is experimenting with smarter routing, personalized user experiences, and better demand prediction. As Athrey puts it: “We’re excited about what generative AI can unlock. And we know AWS will be right there with us as we explore it.”
The journey is far from over. With plans to double its fleet to 100,000 EVs, Yulu is just getting started.
